Rothbury boss Danny Olson is just one of the players that went on into professional football from Wallsend Boys Club - add the likes of Steve Bruce, Peter Beardsley, Michael Carrick and Lee Clark just for starters and you get an idea of the legendary status that the former Swan Hunter’s shipyard works’ side have in the game.
Olson
says he is really looking forward to the Green’s visit to Armstrong Park and
reckons ‘it should be a very entertaining game.’
The Reds
boss has seen his backline bolstered in recent weeks by the return of Tom McPherson
to the side, and the gaffer holds the skipper in high regard.
“We
welcome back the permanent return of influential Tom McPherson and the boost to
the dressing room is testament to the high regard he is held in,” he said.
But Olson
has a couple of injury concerns ahead of the fixture and continued: “Connor Hogg
is missing and Thomas Hammond will have a fitness test before the game. I hope
to see our great fans there and hope we can keep improving on and off the pitch.”
The game is the first of four in a row scheduled at Armstrong Park for Rothbury as they gear up to a bumper festive period of football in Coquetdale. And with fans allowed in to watch the games, they must be rubbing their hands together in eager anticipation.

It’s 9th versus 10th in the Reeves Independent First Division, though Wallsend have played three games more than their hosts – but also have a three-point deduction - so you can expect something of an evenly-matched encounter at Armstrong Park. Although Wallsend have lost 5 of their 11 games so far this season, they have wracked up 29 goals in the process, so going forward isn’t a problem for them. It’s the 32 that they have conceded – the highest in the Division – that illustrates either a frailty at the back, or a gung-ho attitude in going forward that could be exploited on the break. Brandon Moran is the visitor’s dangerman with 6 so far this term.
