REDS TAKE THE POINTS IN A 'GAME OF TWO HALVES'

Rothbury 2 Gosforth Bohemians 1

Gaz McCann hit the Rothbury winner and declared: “That one’s for baby Arley.”

Last season’s leading scorer had missed pre-season and the opening three games as his partner was preparing to give birth to his son.

The striker and smitten new dad continued: “The management has been outstanding and I want to thank them for letting me be with the family through this difficult time.”

Dominic Griffin shot the Reds ahead in the 8th minute and McCann doubled the advantage 20 minutes later as Rothbury bossed the opening period.

“I’m glad to be back and hitting the net again. The team’s starting to gel and get back to playing nice football. I thought we played some nice stuff first half, and I was over the moon hitting the net,” said McCann.

Manager Danny Olson also felt his side were superb in the first period and said: “Well, to use the old cliche a game of two halves, this certainly was, on an absolutely beautiful surface we couldn’t have dominated the ball more in the first forty-five moving the ball around quickly and effectively and enjoying long spells of possession. We couldn’t have been happier.”

But a bit of sloppiness set-in following the turnaround and the Reds made hard work of their second home success, which takes them up into mid-table.

“The second half was definitely that game of two halves,” said Olson.

“Bohs came out with more purpose in the second half and enjoyed good spells of possession themselves. We had to dig in and do the hard things we couldn’t get our passing game going - we maybe could have added more goals but it wasn’t to be, we managed the game well and Jack Halton didn’t really have a save to make in anger.”

With Sam Proudlock claiming the man of the match award for his steadying influence in the heart of the defence, it perhaps showed the difference in the performance.

“Bohs got a lifeline at the death after some sloppy defending on our part,” said Olson, with Andrew Bennett capitalising to get on the scoresheet in stoppage time.

“Overall the signs are getting better. We move out of the bottom three and look forward to travelling to Bedlington next weekend.”
