'NINE MINUTES OF MADNESS' COSTS REDS DEAR

Seaton Burn 3 Rothbury 1

Reeves Independent First Division

It could be a while before the ‘nananananana nanana Gary Goals, Gary, Gary Goals’ refrain is heard at Armstrong Park as the Red’s young striker suffered a terrible injury in the defeat.

Popular Gareth Rickerby was taken to hospital following a collision with the Seaton Burn goalkeeper and fellow forward Chris Coe was quick to wish him all the best for his medical treatment.

Coe got off the mark for the season in an impressive first half display from Rothbury but a quick-fire treble from the hosts, described as ‘nine minutes of madness’ by the pacy wide-man, saw them crash to a third loss.

“I’m pleased to get my first goal of the season - I couldn’t have caught it any sweeter if I tried to be honest. It fell to me nicely and thought why not? and thankfully it went in,” said Coe.

“We played really well in the first half and there wasn’t one player you could single out that wasn’t doing their job. We worked for each other and had the beating of them in the first half, but second half it was 9 minutes of madness that changed the game totally. We had a couple of chances first half to maybe be 2 or 3 ahead at half time but it wasn’t to be,” he continued.

Coe smashed Rothbury ahead in the 39th minute as they bounced back from a heavy loss at leaders Prudhoe YC. But they were left shell-shocked after the interval as goals from Mark Mackie and a Ben Thompson brace between the 50th and 59th minute turned the game in its head.

The skilful Coe heaped praise on the teenagers in the Reds’ squad who have seen them through a difficult opening period to the season where they have seen a number of players unavailable.

“A big shout to the young lads Gareth, Hugh, Thorsten and Josh who have been massive for us these last few weeks. It was also good to see Gaz McCann return for us yesterday, and on behalf of everyone at the club we want to wish Gareth a speedy recovery. We go again Saturday,” he said.

Concerned Rothbury manager Danny Olson and chairman/secretary Dan Herron have both spoken to the badly injured player today, and Olson was pleased to report that the youngster had been released from intensive care.

Herron confirmed: “Gareth is staying in for a few nights while they monitor him. He has suffered some damage to internal organs.”

“One of their players pushed him as he was going for the ball and he clattered the keeper really hard. He was totally delusional after it so my dad took him across to the hospital. It should have been a penalty but the ref gave it the other way,” he said.

Speaking on the game, boss Olson said: “It wasn’t a good day for us. We could have won two games in the first half, just lacked that final delivery. But the players have got in another 90 minutes and there was another teenage debut for young Thorsten Robinson.”

The Reds host Hexham at home in the League on Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm).
