Rothbury v Whitburn & Cleadon
Northern Football Alliance Division One
Saturday 8/02/20 kick-off 2.00pm
Continuing youth development remains a key development area
at Armstrong Park and manager Dan Herron is keen to bring on the Red’s stars of
tomorrow.
Bridging the gap from Youth to Senior football has often
proved problematic in the grassroots game and the gaffer hopes to address this
by inviting the club’s teenagers along to drill with the First Team.
“We want to try and get the 15/16 year olds coming through
into training now to get used to the team. So anyone who is interested should
get in touch,” he said.
“We definitely want to keep the passing philosophy going
through the team - it’s our main objective to keep for the end of the season,”
continued Herron, who wants to see his players comfortable on the ball, playing
the passes and moving to receive through the thirds.
It’s a game plan that has served the Coquetdalers well over
the last couple of seasons and has made for an attractive spectacle for the
watching fans.
The Reds are hoping for a decent turn out on the sidelines tomorrow,
if the game can beat the expected battering from Storm Ciara, as Whitburn &
Cleadon make the trip up from South Shields.
The two sides forged a good link in the Red’s debut seasons
in the Alliance last term and Herron is looking forward to welcoming them back
into the hills.
“They’re a good set of lads to be fair - good crack after
the game and a good side too. They were our closest rival for Division Two last
year. They played good football and have carried on strong in the First Division
too,” he said.
The boss has been impressed with the attitude displayed by
his side as they continue to hand opportunities to young players and said: “Although
we’ve had a couple of injuries, it gives us a chance to have our younger
players starting week in and week out, which is positive.”
