Wooler v Rothbury
Northumberland FA Minor Cup Second Round
Saturday 5th October 2019, kick-off 1.30pm
The long road to St. James' Park gets underway for the Reds
with a winding journey up the A697 to the familiar settings of The Martins in
Glendale.
With last season’s NFA Minor Cup Final being hosted at
Newcastle United’s famous ground for the first time in decades, there is an
added incentive for all of the County’s sides to progress in the competition.
Last season’s dream ticket came courtesy of sponsors Stelrad
Radiators using their ‘Play on the Pitch’ slot to host the game, and while
hopes among the clubs are high that something like this could be repeated, it
seems a case of wait and see at the moment.
But Rothbury boss Dan Herron is keen for his side to have an
impact on this season’s County competition whatever the venue, beginning with
this second round tie against familiar old North Northumberland League
opponents.
Wooler are back in the Alliance Development League these
days, and Herron knows what to expect from the game.
“For sure it will be a tough encounter,” he
said. “We know Wooler well and have had
plenty of battles with them in the past. This is one of the competitions we
targeted at the start of the season, so we will be taking it seriously.”
With his Reds side winning their last three
games on the bounce, the gaffer is hopeful that his players will take that form
into the game.
“We’re hoping that run we’ve been on gives
us a bit of momentum. We’ve been playing well recently and want it to continue,”
he continued.
“It’s good to have Kyle Smith back from a
ban, and it’s a chance for us to maybe make a couple of changes and give
chances to lads depending on availability.”
“Our character recently has been great - it
maybe wasn’t earlier in the season, but in the last few games the attitude and
application has been all I could ask for.”
Note the earlier 1.30pm kick-off time if you plan to follow the Reds.
