Current Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce, Michael Carrick and Peter Beardsley, to name just three – the legendary Wallsend Boys Club, a side formed by the workers at Swan Hunter’s shipyard – has produced over 65 professional footballers over the years.
The Kirkley Park side make their first visit to Coquetdale
on Wednesday night for a Northern Alliance Division One fixture (kick-off 6.15
pm) on the back of an 6-1 drubbing of Felling Magpies at the weekend and a
solid 2-1 victory over Prudhoe YC a couple of nights previously.
But the Boys Club made a stuttering start to the new
campaign with a heavy 6-1 home defeat by Whitburn & Cleadon and a 5-0
reverse at Cramlington United.
While it appears that the visitors may be finding form,
Rothbury boss Dan Herron is hoping for a swift response from his players following
their first defeat of the season at the weekend where they lost 5-1 at Hebburn
Town u23.
Herron certainly feels that the best is yet to come from the
last term’s Second Division champions as they’re still finding their feet at
the higher level.
“We haven’t really found a proper rhythm
yet if I’m honest – we’ve been just a little off the pace still but we’re starting
to get there,” admitted the manager.
“We’ve shown flashes of our best from last
year but haven’t been consistent enough, I guess. It’s still a good start given that
we’re a newly promoted team. It’s a whole step up and the first time we’ve been
here, so we just need to work hard and enjoy it really,” he continued.
While taking the pressure off his players,
Herron is also sure that they will be facing another difficult game where they
will have to dig in deep against Boys Club.
“I’d imagine they’re going to be another
decent test and we’re hoping for as best a squad we can, although there are a
couple missing from injury,” he said.
Away from League action, Rothbury have been
handed a bye in the First Round of the Northumberland FA Minor Cup and Herron
feels that it is a competition that the Reds will be keen to progress in. He is
hopeful of targeting a decent run in a Cup where the Coquetdalers best
performances over the years have seen them reach the quarter finals on a couple
of occasions.
“It’s a one we’ve definitely got our eye on
for sure,” he said.
“It’s the best trophy at this non-league
level to win, so the lads are well up for it. We’d certainly be hoping to set a
new record for Rothbury in the Minor cup anyway. For now at the early stages
though, we’re just taking it game by game.”
Can’t make the game on Wednesday? Don’t
forget the Reds are at home against Red Row Welfare again on Saturday (kick-off
2.30pm).
