Northern Football Alliance Division One
Saturday 31st August 2019, kick-off 2.30pm
Rothbury’s response to a weekend mauling was to produce
their best display of the season so far – and the Reds will be hoping for more
of the same on Saturday.
The Coquetdaler’s 2-1 success against Wallsend Boys Club
took them to 8 points from their opening five games. More importantly for boss
Dan Herron, a tactically switch paid dividends for his side.
“A change in shape made all the difference
and we really clicked. We played some great attacking but possession football,”
he said.
Gareth McCann notched his third of the
season when he capitalised on a short back pass to round the keeper and slot
home, while Sam Proudlock bundled in the second when a Tony Brown free kick
caused problems in the area – and while Herron thought it could easily have
been marked down as an own goal, the delighted defender was happy to claim it.
“It’s really hard to pick anyone out
because it was such a good team performance. Even the subs did well when they
came on,” continued the gaffer.
Keeper Paul Appleby made a brilliant and
important penalty save at 2-0 and while Boys Club pulled one back late on, Jack Angus almost added a third in the final
minute when his powerful header was well saved.
Herron will assess his squad for any knocks
or injuries ahead of Saturday’s match against local rivals Red Row, who slammed
eight past Gosforth Bohs in midweek.
“I think it will be a decent test - all the
games in this league are in fairness - it’s hard to know what to expect because
results can be unexpected. We’re just pleased to be back to winning ways
anyway, and in style,” he continued.
“We could have netted 4 or 5 with the
chances we had. That’s our 28th win in 42 games in the Alliance (including
cups) - not bad going for a village in the sticks!”
