Northern Football Alliance Division One
Saturday 17th August 2019, kick-off 2.30pm.
Gareth McCann grabbed a late equaliser as Rothbury took a
point from their first Northern Alliance Division One fixture at Prudhoe YC in
midweek.
The Reds had led thanks to experienced Chris Fawcett’s 15th
minute opener but were pegged back by two penalties dispatched by Prudhoe’s
Brad Rodgers in the 55th and 76th minutes.
There were only four minutes to go when McCann got on the
scoresheet to prevent a defeat and boss Dan Herron was left to rue a number of
missed opportunities after his side were on top during the opening period.
“We felt it was a decent point in the
end given the way we played in the second half,” said Herron.
“We were a bit disappointed with the
penalties to be honest. They weren’t stonewallers by any means. But Prudhoe
more than deserved something from it, their work rate in the second half was
top class,” he admitted.
“We had chances to extend our lead but
couldn’t take them. It was a relief to see Gar rise and sink that header late
on.”
The Reds host Forest Hall at Armstrong Park on Saturday for
their first home fixture of the season. The visitors drew 3-3 with Cramlington
United on the opening day with Innocent Chirinda netting twice, so he’ll be one
that Tom Macpherson’s back line will look to keep quiet.
Rothbury are already playing catch up after their season
opener at Seaton Burn was washed out as both fellow promoted Whitburn &
Cleadon and Hexham have now won twice to top the table with six points. But it
is early days and Herron has no concerns.
“We just need to up our work rate a
little really,” he said, ahead of Saturday’s game, where he expects no big
surprises since the club’s summer promotion.
“Division
One seems very similar to be honest - all the Alliance leagues are so
competitive to be fair.”
