Rothbury 1 Jesmond 0

Super Sam Proudlock revealed he had been dreaming up a
trademark celebration if he found the back of the net – but when he grabbed the
only goal to keep Rothbury on top of the table, his mind went blank in the ensuing
excitement.
Proudlock rose to power a header in from dead-ball ace Tony
Brown’s corner in the second half as the Reds made up for a recent Amateur Cup
quarter-final knock-out by the visitors.
“I had been excited for the game all week
and was planning a really cool cele in the corner or something, but then it
happened and I just froze and didn’t know what to do!” laughed a beaming Proudlock
afterwards.

“It was a quality feeling to bag the
winner, especially as all the lads felt as if we owed something to Jesmond
after underperforming in the last two meetings. The work rate throughout the team
was quality, and we kept our shape a lot better than the cup game and the
expunged result,” he continued.
“I went close in the first ten minutes, and
I knew I’d get another chance with Tony putting in quality deliveries all game - but that's just bread and butter for him.
In the second half he swung in a beauty and I knew if I got it on target it
would have a good chance of going in. Thankfully it did, and sent the full
capacity Don Jeans West Stand absolutely ballistic. The fans were class again –
it’s a massive lift to the boys especially when it’s a tough game, so we were
glad we could get the job done for them,” said Proudlock.
Jesmond have proved a real handful for Rothbury in their two
previous encounters, netting seven times in those fixtures, and joint player-boss
Tom Macpherson was delighted with the clean sheet as the Reds secured a shut-out
with a disciplined display.
“We’re absolutely buzzing. The lads were keen
to make up for the quarter-final defeat a few weeks ago and completely out-battled
Jesmond. I thought we defended excellently, 1 to 11 we kept our shape
brilliantly and they couldn’t break us down. I thought Sam (Proudlock), Kyle (Smith)
and Travy (Matty Travis) were immense,” said Macpherson.
The visitor’s afternoon was made tougher when they were
reduced to ten men as Clark saw red and Proudlock
was at a loss to explain the intensity of the clashes between the two sides.
“The games against Jesmond have always been
fiesty, fuelled by the rivalry we have for no real reason, so it made the win
even sweeter,” he said.
The Coquetdalers top the table on goal
difference from Whitley Bay SC, who were 6-1 winners over Coundon &
Leeholme, and are five points clear of third placed Whitburn & Cleadon, who
hit seven at Stobswood.
“It was a massive win, and an excellent
goal. Tony put in a brilliant delivery as usual and Sam got up and buried it
into the back of the net. The crack in the bar afterwards was excellent,” said
Macpherson.
