Reds face Premier Division Chemfica in League Cup

Newcastle Chemfica v Rothbury
Reeves Independent George Dobbins League Cup

Rothbury striker Gareth McCann’s foot injury has been the hot topic in the Armstrong Park dressing rooms, and the big hit-man may face a fitness test ahead of the Second Round Cup tie at Premier Division Chemfica.
McCann’s foot has been subject to much ribbing by his team-mates but he had recovered sufficiently to make a substitute appearance in last weekend’s top of the table victory at Whitley Bay SC, so hopes are high in the Coquetdale camp that he’ll be raring to go for Saturday’s game at Coach Lane (kick-off 2.00pm).
Joint player boss Tom Macpherson said: “We’ve missed Gareth’s hold up play - he really links the midfield with the attackers. It’s excellent to have both him and Joel (Laviers) back.”
The skipper himself is doubtful for the tie, and joked: “The only injury worries at the moment are Dan (Herron) and myself, but some might say that’s not a worry.”
Macpherson is looking forward to the side playing against top-flight Alliance opposition and feels it could give the Reds an idea of where they are at.
“It’ll be a tough test for the lads as Chemfica are a well-established Premier Division side, but that’s the level we want to be testing ourselves against. It will give us a good indicator on how far this team can go in the long term.”
