Top-of-the-table Rothbury are on the road again this
Saturday (13/10/18) – and it’s a big one as they take on second-placed Whitley
Bay Sporting Club (Valley Gardens, 2.30pm kick-off).
The Reds are two points ahead of Bay and the fixture marks
the end of the opening third of the season. Both sides have been beaten just
once in the Team Valley Carpets Second Division this term, though Rothbury were
5-0 victors over the hosts in the George Dobbins League Cup at Armstrong Park
recently.
But joint player-boss Tom Macpherson is under no illusions about the difficulty of the fixture and said: “We beat them 5-0 at Rothbury, but by all accounts they are much stronger at home and unbeaten so far this season at their pitch, so it’ll be a tough task.”

“It is a massive game for us. It marks one third of the
league games and the chance of going five points clear - what a start that
would be,” he continued.
“We will be approaching the game the same as all our other
games this season, going for the win. Having already played Whitley, we know
what to expect; their number 10 is dangerous and they are good at counter-attacking
football. Confidence is high at the moment, let’s hope it continues.”
Rothbury’s playing squad is boosted by returning players and
Macpherson is confident that the Reds can field a strong side.
“We welcome Matty Travis back into the squad this
weekend after his four week holiday, which means we nearly have a full squad to
choose from,” he said.
