Last-gasp winner earns Reds' first win

SUPER Joel Laviers cranked up the Armstrong Park excitement with a stoppage-time winner against the Seasiders.

Laviers also had a big hand in Rothbury’s late equaliser, drilling a low centre across the six-yard box for big Gareth McCann to tuck into the net from close range as the Coquetdalers came from behind in the mid-week clash to claim three points in their historic first home fixture in the Alliance.

Joel Laviers celebrates his late winner with a 'Dele'
When a long-range strike from Brian Blackburn was deflected into the net to put Rovers in the driving seat early in the second-half, it looked as if they’d done enough to edge a hard-fought victory on a rain-sodden night.

But in the 88th minute, never-say-die Rothbury patiently worked the ball out wide on the right and Laviers showed a cool head by driving into the box and looking up to pick out his man. McCann’s cheeky far post back-heel squeezed into the bottom corner and sparked scenes of wild celebration.

They were nothing, however, compared to the outpouring of emotion that came in the 92nd minute. Tony Brown, whose dead ball delivery and pin-point passing around the box had caused Rovers problems all evening, whipped over a right wing corner to the back post.

In the ensuing scramble, the ball came back off the woodwork and was knocked off the line before sitting up kindly for Laviers and he gleefully snapped up the chance, thundering into the roof of the net from close range.

The sizable crowd erupted and the players skidded on their knees on the wet pitch before falling in a heap at the corner flag, wild-eyed with cheers of delight and relief.

Rothbury are at home again this Saturday when they meet Coundon & Leeholme at Armstrong Park, kick-off 2.30 pm.
